Coffee Structural Reforms | Tanzania

An opportunity more than a threat...

Context

Tanzania produces over 1M bags of coffee. Multinationals channel the majority of the exports and circa 90% of the certification schemes & sustainability programs in the country. The 2018 crop shipments are expected to start in August.

The problem

Multinationals are not allowed to operate locally anymore, this means all sales must go through the auction therefore farmers are obliged to join existing or to be formed local Coops.

Direct Consequences

  • No production of Fully Washed coffees in South to be expected
  • No production of certified coffees finding it's way to the roaster buyers
  • High possibility for disruption of the coffee flow and lack of focus on quality standards throughout the chain

There is more to East Africa's potential

And many more, including Ugandan and Kenyan coffees.
